Bangalore fans get into a frenzy on Rajini’s birthday

Rajinikanth turned 61, and his fans left no stone unturned to make sure the superstar had a memorable birthday. People from different walks of life gathered near Seshadripuram, to have a day of fun, food and laughter.

As the icing on the 20kg cake was being laid, young children eagerly trooped into the bakery to catch a glimpse of the star-and-guitar-shaped pastry.

As evening dawned, fans went berserk. They burst crackers and had a merry time, celebrating the birth of their favourite star.

Young boys showed off their Rajinikanth tattoo, and said that they had got it done when they were much younger. “I am a huge fan of Rajnikanth and here’s the proof,” said a fan proudly showing his tattoo on his forearm.

The elderly fans, not wanting to be left out, showed their love for the superstar. Many women clung on to the Rajinikanth’s life-size portrait that was put up.

The superstar has been ruling the industry for over 25 years now, and has more than 50,000 fan clubs around the world. His fans throng cinema halls to catch the first-day, first- show of any of his movies.

Sonakshi Sinha signed for Race 2

Post the release of Dabangg, Sonakshi Sinha's career seems to have sky-rocketed. First the good looking actress bagged Joker opposite Akshay Kumar and now Sonakshi has been also finalised for Race 2.

Race 2, directed by Abbas-Mustan and produced by Ramesh Taurani (Tips), stars big names such as Anil Kapoor, Saif Ali Khan, John Abraham and Deepika Padukone. With Sonakshi joining the cast of Race 2, things only get bigger and better.

Confirming the same, producer Ramesh Taurani says, "Yes we have finalised Sonakshi along with Deepika for the female lead and are now on the look out for one more actress to play the role of the female character."

The film goes on floors next year.

'Raktha Charithiram' - Weak script a let down (Tamil Film Review; Rating: **1/2)

Film: 'Raktha Charithiram'; Cast: Suriya, Vivek Oberoi, Shatrughan Sinha, Kota Srinivasa Rao, Kitty, Priyamani, Radhika Apte and others; Direction: Ram Gopal Verma; Producer: Sheetal Talwar; Rating: **1/2

The cudgels are out. Beware, it's RGV who reigns at the screens in Chennai and the rest of Tamil Nadu. Ram Gopal Varma, whose Nagarjuna-starring 'Udhayam' is still fresh in the minds the viewers despite the two-decade gap, is back in his inimitable style with his next flick titled 'Raktha Charithiram' that stars Suriya in a central role.

As expected, 'Raktha Charithiram' turns out to be a morbid tale but appears to be a documentary, very much unlike the RGV we are familiar with. Despite the disclaimer at the beginning that the story is a fictitious one, everyone knows that it is the tale of a bitter feud between Paritala Ravi and Surya against the backdrop of the murky world of Andhra Pradesh politics during the '80s and the better part of the '90s.

For reasons best known to him, RGV has made it as a two-part film in its Telugu and Hindi versions, whereas the Tamil version has just one part, with the focus obviously on Surya (the role played with amazing proportions by Suriya).

In fact, deviating from the typical Tamil film style, Suriya makes a fantastic entry only after 23 minutes from the start of the film.

For the benefit of Tamil viewers, director Gautham Menon narrates (in the backdrop) as to what happened in the first part of the film to throw light on the reason behind the hatred and animosity between the two principal players, Pratap (Vivek Oberoi) and Surya (Suriya).

The story kicks off in Anandapuram, a sleepy remote village somewhere in rural Tamil Nadu. The powerful feudal landlord and political leader Narasimha Moorthy (Kitty) wants to make Veerabhadran, his friend, a big player in the local politics. Moorthy's brother Nagamani (Kota Srinivasa Rao) gets jealous and plans to kill Veerabhadran.

Pratap, Veerabhadran's son, is a Good Samaritan in love with Nandini (Radhika Apte). He, however, wants to take revenge on the Moorthy family. He joins the party of politician Sivaji (Shatrungnan Sinha) and becomes a minister in his cabinet.

Now enters Surya (Suriya), a construction engineer who loves and wants to marry Bhavani (Priyamani). He returns to his village soon after hearing the cold-blooded murder of his father Moorthy. Unlike Pratap, Surya doesn't want any revenge for his father's death but only wants safe passage to the city, where he wants to take his mother and brother.

The moment he witnesses the terrible death of his mother and brother in a bomb explosion, he changes his mind and sets out on a seemingly impossible mission to wipe out Pratap at any cost.

The film is a grisly, violent tale about two individuals who bay for each other's blood. It may even fail to touch a chord with the Tamil audiences as it's based on a true story which took place in the neighbouring Andhra Pradesh.

The court and fighting sequences stand out with their smart execution.

Surya's powerful performance is the highlight of the film. The moment he appears on screen, the audience can ill-afford to take their eyes off him lest they miss out on a subtle change in his facial expression. Surya both breathes fire and oozes calm as he lets the audience feel the fire and ice within. His cry of agony at his mother and brother's death would move anybody.

Vivek Oberoi is the perfect foil to Surya and displays vulnerability in an effortless manner. Priyamani and Radhika are very good and just perfect for the role of demure wives of the two tough guys. The other actors impress the audience with their neat work.

Technically, there is nothing much to write about as the background score is too noisy. The cinematography, which always plays an important role in many of RGV's movies, is just about average.

However great a filmmaker RGV is, he could do very little with a weak script - this is what plagues 'Ratha Charithiram' the most.

Watch it for Surya, if not for anything else!

Saif-Kareena's relationship in trouble

Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor, one of the hottest couples in B-Town, reportedly had their share of trouble recently, when Saif’s two kids, along with their mother Amrita Singh, had gone to stay with Saif at his Bandra residence.

Kareena Kapoor has to face Saif’s kids when they visit him in Mumbai. Normally, whenever Saif is with his kids, Kareena used to give them some space and leaves them for a while like she did during their recent holiday in London. However, she refused to pamper the kids though Saif wanted her to during their recent visit. This led to a breach of communication between the two for six days at a stretch.

However, reports say that when Saif and Kareena had gone to a Cineplex in Mumbai to watch the premiere of Anjaana Anjaani, Saif’s kids were there, all happy to be with Kareena and dad Saif Ali Khan!

Katrina recreates Meena Kumari magic for Tees Maar Khan

Decades ago, the timeless Meena Kumari had audiences mesmerized every time she gazed the screen with her golden presence. With Katrina Kaif on board, Farah Khan thought it was only apt to recreate the 'Meena Kumari magic/effect' onscreen in her forthcoming film Tees Maar Khan.

Katrina's 'Pakeezah' look in the 'qawalli' number in the film is a tribute to the yesteryear's legendary actress. States director Farah Khan, "Katrina's look has been modelled on Pakeezah .While Akshay and Salman can be expected to have a lot of fun with this track, it (actually) belongs to Katrina, as she is going to surprise the audience."

The 'qawalli' track titled 'Wallah Re Wallah' will has a complete local Mumbaiya feel to it and will be a complete foot-tapper.

Tees Maar Khan, which stars Akshay Kumar and Katrina Kaif in the lead roles, releases on 24th December 2010.

Katrina Kaif's Xmas in London

Christmas is round the corner and New Year is not far. It’s the time of the year that Katrina Kaif looks forward to with bated breath. For it’s during Xmas and New Year’s Eve that she bonds with her siblings in London.

It’s reunion time for the Kaifs, and Katrina, despite still being in pain from her recent surgery, has left for London, we hear.

Kat is particularly excited about playing with her sister’s little kid.

“I just want to be with my sister’s little boy, take him to the toy stores in London and buy him everything he wants,” she is quoted as saying by a tabloid.

Katrina isn’t also very worried about her health for there is a doctor friend in London who will look after her. Moreover, the stunner believes that being close to the people she loves will help her heal faster.

However, Katrina won’t be able to be with Salman Khan on his coming birthday on December 27. That should hardly make a difference because Salman is known to celebrate his B-day and New Year with his brothers and family.

Kareena falls ill ahead of 3 Idiots release

Kareena Kapoor is ill ahead of the release of her movie 3 Idiots. The actress is suffering from food poisoning since Saturday and has been advised rest. She is on the road to recovery now. Kareena fell ill while shooting for an ad at Mehboob Studios. She finished shooting somehow and went home. Her doctor diagnosed her with food poisoning and asked her to rest. Kareena then cancelled all her media interactions for Sunday afternoon.

While she is known to follow a healthy diet, she might have eaten something wrong. She is now on medication and is recovering. Kareena confirmed that she is ill and has been asked to rest. She adds that she is getting better and is waiting for her film’s release.

Why advertisers aren't gung ho about Ranbir... yet

Ranbir Kapoor has everything going for him but the brand endorsements -- so far.

He is the hottest -- and most bankable -- star in tinseltown these days. He has big banners chasing him and directors wanting to work with him, and he probably commands a hefty amount of money for the movies he does act in. But when it comes to brand endorsements, Ranbir Kapoor still has a long way to go.

So far, Kapoor has three brands in his kitty: Panasonic, Provogue and Pepsi. For someone who has delivered two successful movies in the year 2009 -- Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani and Wake Up Sid -- this is a little unusual.

Of course, Pepsi signed him way back in 2008 for its Youngistan campaign, and Panasonic got him on board earlier this year.

"He is still relatively new and you have to understand that unlike in the case of cricketers, marketers prefer to go with established film stars," says Santosh Desai, CEO of Future Brands.

Priyanka Chopra in panel of judges

Bollywood star Priyanka Chopra added some glamour to the panel of judges at the Miss World Pageant, hosted by the City of Johannesburg as a tourism marketing tool for the second year in a row.

"I'm a lot more nervous than the girls," Chopra said when asked how she felt about helping decide how the life of one young woman would change forever.

"(Watching them) I remembered every moment when I was up there myself (in 2000)," the former Miss World said.

The last time India won the title was in 2000 when Priyanka Chopra brought home the crown.

India has produced five Miss Worlds with Reita Faria winning the title in 1966, followed by Aishwarya Rai in 1994, Diana Hayden in 1997 and Yukta Mookhey 1999, apart from Chopra.

Venezuela and India have produced the maximum number of Miss Worlds - five each.

'Paa' has fetched me the best response since 'Parineeta': Vidya

Vidya Balan is extremely happy with an all around positive response that she has got for her role of an unwed mother in Paa. While keeping her emotions in check and not allowing all the appreciation to make her go overtly gaga, Vidya does admit though that such huge response has come to her four long years after her debut effort 'Parineeta.

"I guess the wait has been worth it", says Vidya who plays the mother of a 12 year old kid (played by Amitabh Bachchan) suffering from Progeria in Paa, "I was doing films and by God's grace most of them were successful as well. However, the kind of respect that is coming the way of everyone associated with Paa is overwhelming, heart warming and above all humbling."

It is this respect factor that has been the biggest moment for Vidya. When the film's trial was held a few days back, she was convinced that the film would certainly be remembered for its sincerity, honesty and truthfulness. Though box office factor wasn't to be ignored, she along with director Balki knew that at the least film would see good respectability coming its way.

"One can't say much about box office in any case because sometimes even the most quintessential commercial flicks don't really click with the audiences. However, you instinctively know whether your film has turned out to be a quality outing or not. I remember the days of Lage Raho Munnabhai when we came out of the first screening. Along with Raj Kumar Hirani, I knew that we had made a good film. Same was the case with Paa", details Vidya.

Now she is eagerly awaiting the box office response for Paa. Given the fact that it is coming a week after De Dana Dan and a week before Rocket Singh-Salesman of The Year, Paa has to score and do that really fast.

"I have been told though that the film has been accepted well by the audience and along with critical appreciation, it is also showing good word of mouth from those who have seen it", she says with that characteristic smile of hers.

What she says does hold good ground. Though the opening wasn't exceptional (as expected due to its theme), the film has shown a constant increase in crowd inflow with every passing show. Says a trade insider, "The occupancy for Paa on Saturday is almost double than that of Friday. Everyone thought that the film was mainly targeting the class audiences in big cities but it is doing well even in interiors like Nagpur and other cities and towns."

Meanwhile, Vidya's phone hasn't stopped ringing. "Such appreciation is always welcome. Ever since the film's premiere, there have been congratulatory calls, which is heart warming. I have been literally glued to my cell-phone for last 3 days at stretch and I am certainly not complaining."

Given the fact that her last film Kismat Konnection (2008) was a success and so was Bhool Bhulaiyaa (2007), she would be used to such adulation, isn't it?

"Honestly speaking, there have been good words but such volume of calls is a first", she confesses, "I remember getting quite a few messages during Bhool Bhulaiyaa or Kismat Konnection. However, so many people actually making an effort and giving me a call reminds me of Parineeta days. Paa has fetched me the best response since my debut film."

With her much in news Ishqiya round the corner that has an author backed role reserved for her, one waits to see if Vidya gets a further one up over Paa and Parineeta in weeks to come. Starring Naseruddin Shah and Arshad Warsi as the male protagonists, Abhishek Chaubey directed Ishqiya is produced by Vishal Bhardwaj & Raman Maroo and sees a 15th January release.

I am not turning producer: Katrina Kaif

Katrina Kaif has denied reports of her turning producer with a remake of French film "A la folie...pas du tout" and said she is happy with the way her acting career is shaping up.

"I have no clue from where these rumours originate. It all seems to be coming out of thin air. There was never any indication by me in this regard," Katrina told IANS.

There were reports that Katrina was playing a student in love with a married doctor in the remake of the French film "A la folie...pas du tout" ("He Loves Me...He Loves Me Not"). While she urges him to leave his pregnant wife, he doesn't reciprocate accordingly.

"Well, sounds like an interesting story. However, any talk centred on the production of this film or any other movie for that matter is plain speculation," the actress said.

Katrina lights up when the talk veers to the super success of "Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani".

"Well, yes, we have got an amazing reaction for the film. Honestly, that was never really expected. Hence the way it has opened and sustained itself so well is pretty much a pleasant surprise," said Katrina who teamed up with Ranbir Kapoor in the romantic comedy.

She is aware that now suddenly everybody feels that Katrina and Ranbir make the hottest on-screen pair and should be seen in more movies.

"Of course, if a good film comes in, I would love to do a film with Ranbir. However, I can't just look at my co-star - I should have an amazing role, the script should be good and so should be the director. Even if one of these anchors fall down, the movie can't be expected to fetch great results," she said.

Katrina would be next seen in Priyadarshan's "De Dana Dan" opposite Akshay Kumar that releases this Friday.

For someone who was written off six years ago after the release of "Boom" (2003), she has indeed come a long way with more than five hits in two years.

Does she get impacted by people's adulation?

"Frankly, I take it all with a pinch of salt. One can never get too carried away in this industry because at the end of the day, it doesn't achieve you anything at all. The best way is to look at the work you are doing and continue to make careful choices," Katrina said.

Jacqueline Fernandez still with John Abraham?

Priyanka, Shahid flaunt same mobile number!

Mumbai: Priyanka Chopra and Shahid Kapur have apparently not been too willing to be associated with each other, of late. But now, it’s a mobile number which has perhaps gone against their wishes!

Coincidentally, in Madhur Bhandarkar’s blockbuster flick ‘Fashion’, there was a scene where Priyanka, who played a model, displayed a mobile number on screen at every audition. And now, Shahid, who plays a film aspirant in Ken Ghosh’s ‘Chance Pe Dance’, has been spotted displaying the same mobile number in the theatrical trailer of the film.

Well, this reportedly happened because the both the films have been presented by the same film corporation (UTV), which mistakenly got Priyanka and Shahid displaying the same mobile number!

A source says, “If it had struck Shahid that the number he was holding on the slate is the same one that Priyanka had used in ‘Fashion’, he would probably have asked the writers to change it. Now he has just to live with the fact that what was once Priyanka’s is now his by default, if not by design.”

Lakshmi Rai is no exception, but now, after shedding oodles of weight, insists her item dance days are behind her! With her new toned look, Lakshmi Rai has upped the glam quotient, but is now concentrating solely on main roles. She does not want to play second fiddle to another actress and has absolutely refused to consider any single dance numbers.

"I have always played glamorous roles. I'm comfortable with that image. But no matter how glam I get, I would not even think of doing only an item dance in a movie. Rather than dance to a super hit song, I would play the lead in a movie that bombs at the box office," she reported said in a recent interview.

Aditi becomes Mallika on Bigg Boss

Everyone enjoys attention especially when one doesn’t have to lift a finger for anything! Here we are talking about the new weekly task ‘Malika-e-Bigg Boss’. London Dreams Reviews

Amadeus, anyone? We'd suggest you don't even mention the name of the legendary film, which went on to win eight Oscars, in the same breath as London Dreams, the film that is ostensibly inspired by it.

Only then will it be possible to savour the finer aspects of this desi dosti pix that follows the relationship between two childhood buddies who share a similar passion for music. If Milos Forman's Amadeus traced the stormy comradeship between Antonio Salieri (F Murray Abraham), the Vienese court composer, and legendary genius, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (Tom Hulce), then London Dreams sees a lesser talented Ajay Dvgn articulating a similar angst as his gifted friend, Salman Khan, steals the thunder, despite his disinterest in super stardom.

But the similarity ends there. For, the plot of London Dreams is completely simplistic and linear, often bordering on the implausible. Devgn's journey from Bhatinda to London, his formation of a rock band with a bunch of stragglers, his rise to popularity and his sudden climactic outburst lack all depth. Salman's fall from grace is kiddish too. Suddenly, from sniffing cocaine, thrust on to him by a mysterious girl, he grows into a diehard junkie, only to de-addict himself with equal felicity. And then comes the climax, running helter-skelter from Devgn's jealous outburst to rushed repentance, with Salman signing off with the moral of the film: Pra toh pra hota hai, pra! (A brother is a brother, brother, so no sorrys.) Then again, it's pronto to London, to fulfil the still unfulfilled London Dream of making it big in Wembley with Devgn's desi band. Truly, this one's a poor piece of script writing by Suresh Nair.

But there's a lot that works in the film's favour. Topping the list are the performances by both Ajay Devgn and Salman Khan who once again share a scintillating chemistry after Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam. It's refreshing to see Devgn return to his angry young man mould as Arjun, a role he's played to perfection in films like Company and Omkara. Salman, as Mannu, the libidinous village yokel, reprises his brattish avtar, playing to the gallery with his throwaway lines and his devil-may-care attitude. There is an effortless spontaneity and ease to everything he does, be it being stripped to his boxers at Heathrow or playing the trumpet in the local Raja Rani band in Bhatinda. The first half of the film, set mostly in the village, has a rustic charm and innocent banter as the two buddies try to catch up on their dosti. The second half -- the dushmani track -- intermittently bursts into life when a self-flagellating Devgn raves and rants against the injustice of God. Why did you give him the talent and me the passion, he clamours, swearing to bring down his best buddy who has become more popular than him. What's more, he's managed to walk away with pretty girl, Asin, too, despite his playboy ways. Truly, a double jeopardy for our angst-ridden hero who become a victim of envy and rage. It's the weight-and-wild combo of Devgn and Salman which imbues the film with most of its appeal and draws you into it with the strength of the performances. Asin too is effervescent, though she has little to do. MTV hero Rannvijay sadly ends up as a sidekick, hanging on the fringes as Devgn's shadow. But the biggest let down of the film is it's music. Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy's songs are completely out of sync with the rock band flavour of the film. Can't remember a single foot-tapping number, other than the ode to Hanuman.

Nevertheless, watch it for the Devgn-Salman thunder and for the simple reason that this is definitely one of Vipul Shah's better films.

Big B’s Aladin to kick off NY South Asian film fest

The fantasy adventure, Aladin, starring Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan, becomes the first Hindi film to kick off the South Asian International Film Festival (SAIFF) in New York since its inception in 2004. Director Sujoy Ghosh says "it's like a wish come true".

Aladin, which also stars Sanjay Dutt as Ringmaster, Riteish Deshmukh in the title role and debutante Jacqueline Fernandes as Jasmine, will be screened at The Paris Theatre on October 28.

"It is definitely a wish come true to be chosen as the opening film for SAIFF. A lot of people have worked over a period of a long time to make Aladin and an honour like this fully makes it worthwhile. It's a great platform for an Indian film to be showcased to a global audience. I am grateful to SAIFF for making this happen for Aladin." said Ghosh.

"We are excited and honoured to kick off the weeklong festival with Sujoy Ghosh's first feature film," said Shilen Amin, SAIFF President, in a press statement.

"SAIFF's continuing mission is to discover new artists and provide an international platform to emerging independent South Asian filmmakers to showcase their creativity. Main Aurr Mrs Khanna is what they call a "home production" in Bollywood slang. It's the kind of film a star agrees to do in exchange for a fat salary that pays for his or her dream home. When the deal is so good, you don't raise questions about the script.

That's the best explanation, and in fact the only one you can think of to understand why Salman Khan or Kareena Kapoor would participate in a film as lame as this one.

Written and directed by debutant Prem Soni, Main Aurr Mrs Khanna stars Salman and Kareena as Samir and Raina, a Melbourne-based couple whose loving marriage hits the rocks when he loses his job and decides to move to Singapore to pursue a new one. For reasons that are never clearly explained in the film, Mr Khanna decides his Mrs can't accompany him there, and arranges for her to return to his parents back home in India.

Mrs, however, decides to stay back in Melbourne and seeks out a job at the airport. She's befriended by Sohail Khan who plays Akash, a waiter at the airport café, who soon finds himself falling for her. Before he can tell her though, her husband is back, now all loaded, and ready to take her with him.

There are dumb scripts and dumber scripts, but Main Aurr Mrs Khanna has got to be the dumbest. You feel nothing for the film's characters because you cannot understand why they behave the way they do. It's the kind of screenplay in which every obstacle in the characters' lives could be overcome by having one sensible conversation which for some strange reason, they never have.

Preity Zinta makes an embarrassing cameo as a Pakistani mujra artiste who's employed by Akash to seduce Mr Khanna so his Mrs might think poorly of him. Forget how that situation ends up playing out in the film, poor Preity is saddled with a thankless item song and such cheesy dialogue, she ought to demand damages.

Salman Khan in rust-brown hair and sleepy eyes looks like he really doesn't want to be in this film at all, while Kareena Kapoor at least makes the effort to dress lovely. Neither, however, contributes anything that can described as a performance. A few comic moments are provided by Sohail Khan whose facial gymnastics are probably the only thing worth mentioning about this film, in addition to that one hummable song Don't say Alvida.

I'm going with one out of five and a thumbs down for director Prem Soni's Main Aurr Mrs Khanna; it's a mystery how films like this get made.

Big bang at the box office on Diwali

It's going to be a firecracker of a weekend this Diwali with three big ticket Bollywood films hitting the theatres. With about Rs 200 crore riding on Blue, Main Aurr Mrs Khanna and All the Best, the film industry is keeping its fingers crossed.

While all three films boast of multi-crore budgets and big star cast, they are quite different in theme, giving filmgoers more reason to queue up at the box office.

The biggest release this weekend is the Rs 100 crore Blue, touted as the costliest Bollywood film ever. Directed by Anthony D'Souza, the film stars Akshay Kumar, Sanjay Dutt, Lara Dutta and Zayed Khan. Multi-Oscar winner AR Rahman has composed the music.

An action film, Blue revolves around the hunt for an underwater treasure guarded by sharks. Parts of the film was shot underwater at The Bahamas.

Blue also has an international tinge about it. While the film has been scripted by American writers Joshua Lurie and Bryan M Sullivan, Kylie Minogue features in an item number.

The producers of the film have reportedly spent Rs 12 crore only on the publicity.

Main Aurr Mrs Khanna is the story of an extra-marital affair set in the backdrop of an international airport. Salman Khan, Kareena Kapoor and Sohail Khan play the three protagonists.

Prem R Soni makes his directorial debut with the Rs 40 crore film. Like most recent Salman movies the music is composed by Sajid-Wajid.

Adding a bit of fun to the action and romance packed weekend is All the Best, starring Ajay Devgn, Sanjay Dutt, Bipasha Basu, Fardeen Khan and Mugdha Godse.

Director Rohit Shetty's latest comedy of errors promises to keep the audience cheerful. Ajay Devgn's latest home production was put together at a cost of over Rs 35 crore.

Salman's star power and Kareena's oomph could be enough for Main Aurr... producers Ronnie Screwvala and Sohail Khan to rake in the moolah. Rohit Shetty's track record of successful comedies may just give Ajay Devgn a taste of success as a producer.

While the mega budget Blue, given the hype surrounding the film, is believed to have an edge in the triangular contest. But the audiences often manage to throw up a surprise at the box office.

Acid Factory - Movie Review

Besides Abbas-Mustan, Sanjay Gupta has attempted interesting thrillers in the past. His new outing, Acid Factory, directed by Suparn Verma, is a cat-n-mouse chase that will have you on edge of the seat as it unfolds.

Inspired by Hollywood film Unknown, Acid Factory is engaging in most parts. Also, it's well adapted to suit Indian sensibilities. It starts off strong enough and keeps the momentum going till the end, though, of course, it goes back and forth at times and that could get a bit confusing.

Acid Factory demands your attention from the very start. The viewer ought to stay alert and watch the goings-on carefully. Even if you blink, chances are you may miss a vital link and the subsequent portions may not work for you since there's something happening every minute.

At the same time, Acid Factory has its share of loose ends. The climax, for instance, could've been more impactful. Also, the concept is too urbane and holds appeal for the urban youth, who've a penchant for slick thrillers.

Final word? Acid Factory is a well-crafted, well executed film with the ensemble cast pitching in competent performances.

A man [Fardeen Khan] wakes up in a deserted factory surrounded by several other seemingly dead men. He has absolutely no memory of who he is or how he got there and he is unable to get out. Before too long, the others [Aftab Shivdasani, Dino Morea, Manoj Bajpayee, Danny Denzongpa, Dia Mirza] wake up and they all have amnesia too.

All they know is that some of them have been shot, one is tied to a chair, a third is hanging by his wrist, which is handcuffed to a railing... It is eventually discovered that they have lost their memory because of gas leaked from a container.

Much later, they figure out that two of them have been kidnapped by the other three. Who are the kidnappers and who are their victims? Meanwhile, the police are tracking a sinister man [Irrfan Khan], while a worried wife [Neha] desperately searches for her husband.

Acid Factory has enough going for it, thanks to its premise which is intriguing. But the plot is such that it takes time to come to the point. There's not much happening in the first hour, except the fact that everyone's clueless about their identity and how they seem trapped in a dilapidated factory.

But the answers start flowing in the second hour. The answers come quick and the reasons why they are trapped are also justified. But, as mentioned earlier, the conclusion could've been as realistic like the rest of the proceedings. Also, the track of the harried wife trying to trace her husband isn't too convincing.

This is Suparn Verma's second film as a director and midway through the film, you realise that Suparn has grown as a storyteller. The film bears a slick look and also, the narrative holds your attention for most parts. Cinematography is top notch. So is the sound design. Tinu Verma's stunts and chase sequences deserve distinction marks.

Every actor pitches in an effortless performance. They aren't putting on an act. The film has an assorted mix of experienced and accomplished actors [Danny Denzongpa, Manoj Bajpayee and Irrfan Khan] and yet-to-reach-there actors [Fardeen Khan, Aftab Shivdasani, Dino Morea and Dia Mirza] and each display confidence in their respective parts. Neha doesn't get scope, while Gulshan Grover is as usual.

On the whole, Acid Factory is a slick thriller that has an interesting premise and also super stunts and chase sequences as its trump cards. The film is targeted at the urban youth, especially those who relish thrillers. Of course, the film will have to storm the dull pre-Diwali period which might curtail its prospects to an extent despite decent merits and also, the three biggies that arrive next Friday.

Wake Up Sid Review

They, four drunken young friends, are driving back home. They are happy and high. And Sidharth Mehra (Ranbir Kapoor) wants to enjoy the moment.

So he sticks his neck out of the sunroof and lets the friendly breeze feel his face. Without ambition or direction, that's how Sid would forever love his life to be: a cool breeze he can waltz with.

But life has a way of throwing up surprises. And none is bigger for the rich, cool kid than the accidental encounter with Aisha Banerjee (Konkona Sen Sharma), a just-arrived girl from Kolkata, the sort who reads Murakami's Norwegian Wood and hangs Woody Allen's Annie Hall posters in her room. She is independent, focused, gritty -- everything Sid is not. But there's a kismat connection between the two. And when Sid gets into a big fight with his dad over his career, or the lack of it, he moves out of his capacious home into Aisha's cuddly apartment. It is the beginning of his education in life and its realities, his first chapters of growing up.

Wake Up Sid could have been just another spoilt-brat's coming-of-age flick: plenty of attitude but bereft of soul. But it ends up being much, much more. And what makes it special is debutant director Ayan Mukerji's (also the film's writer) attention to detail, his nuanced way of looking at GenNow life. The relationship of the lead pair is every inch 21st century urban; but it doesn't follow the route of liplocks and no-condom sex to become so.

The change in the tenor of relationship between the lead pair as well as the texture of their own changing selves is detailed with diligence, delineated with tenderness. We understand Sid's joy on making his first omelette. And we enjoy the moment when he rustles up the fastest birthday cake in the world: a lone matchstick burning atop four pieces of bread and jam.

Mukerji gets the bigger picture right too. There's a subtlety with which he repairs the relationship between Sid and his mother (Supriya Pathak). The distance between the two is born out of the different cultures the two belong to. She is uneducated, he is westernised and the twain don't meet. There's a tragic dimension to the Punjabi mother who speaks English, even though it is pretty awful, hoping that it will bring her Westernised son closer. It's tragic because we know it's so real.

Sid has warts: he is great with friends but rude to those not on his wavelength: his mother, dad, servant. Through him, we know that the ugly and the cute can live together in the same person. It is not an easy part and to Ranbir Kapoor's credit, he is near perfect. But Konkona as Aisha is simply outstanding. Her performance underlines how good actors instil regular part with real soul.

The script offers generous space to Sid's extra-large friend Laxmi, a rare instance when an obese girl is not a caricature in Bollywood. And we love the fourth-floor bombshell in Aisha's apartment, Kashmira Shah in a bindaas, wine-drinking act. Kher is brilliantly controlled as Sid's father. In fact, every actor is perfectly cast. Whoever is the movie's casting director deserves a pre-Diwali bonus.

Neatly lensed, the movie looks at Bombay -- and now after producer Karan Johar's apology, Mumbai -- with love and affection. Too bad, Raj Thackeray missed the point. The songs -- lyrics Javed Akhtar, music Shankar Ehsaan Loy -- have a sense of romance too. But none is better than composer Amit Trivedi's Iktara, a song filled with an unbearable lightness of being. Songs make the movie soar; they help us look inside the head and mood of Sid and Aisha and help carry the story forward.

In the end, Wake Up Sid becomes a sort of template of how GenNow navigate their lives: deal with their own little rebellions, find meaning to their own definitions of independence and handle their own set of mistakes. It feels good when the two friends finally meet in driving rain under the grey skies by the sea. Refreshing and heart-warming, Wake Up Sid really puts you in the mood for love.

Piracy in Bollywood, UTV takes legal action

It's the first time ever that a corporate face has been dragged into the public for films piracy.

Employees belonging to Anil Ambani-owned Adlabs Films, Kanwar promoted UFO Moviez and the one of the oldest home entertainment labels Sheramoo, have all been accused of aiding the piracy of the movie "What's your Rashee?'

The arrest of the two corporate executives has firmly put the spotlight on the corporate source of film piracy. They, along with a third co-accused, have been arrested for pirating the film "What's Your Rashee?"

Shah and Nagda were responsible for overseas distribution of Bollywood films, while Rajesh Chaudhary, an Associate vice-president of UFO Movies, was responsible for digitising them before release.

In response, a shocked UTV, the producer of the film has slapped a notice on Adlabs Films and UFO Moviez, seeking Rs 50 crore each in damages.

In its notice UTV said, "Since the print has been pirated and made available in the market, the film will also lose a significant portion from its theatrical market."

UFO Moviez said it sacked the employee in question and is considering legal implications.

Kapil Agarwal, Joint MD of UFO Moviez, said, "We will now take a call if the claim is binding on us."

However, Adlabs for its part said, "We shall take all appropriate legal actions against any person or persons in the organisation found guilty of any lapse or misconduct. Piracy is eating away a substantial chunk of the legitimate revenues of the entertainment industry and Reliance ADA group stands committed to fight this evil."

Piracy has been an age-old problem in the Indian film industry. Analysts say that the industry loses around Rs 5000 crore every year to piracy.

Meanwhile, investigators are now looking at the Pakistani angle to the piracy trade. They say the prints travelled across the border and from there across the globe.

After the success of Jab We Met and Kaminey, it's Dil Bole Hadippa for Shahid Kapur. The actor, along with his co-star Rani Mukerjee was at the Odeon Big Cinemas in the Capital on Wednesday for the promotion of his upcoming flick. We caught up with the dashing Kapur for a tête-à-tête and got him talking about his new release, his onscreen chemistry with Rani and on playing a cricketer.

"Hadippa is a family entertainer and I loved being a part of this film. I have been a cricket fan ever since I was a kid and thought that playing a cricketer would be a great idea. I was also curious about the character Veeru and how Rani would play it," says Shahid.

Gaga over Rani!
The hunk, who had girls drooling all over him at the press meet, was all praises for his co-star Rani in Dil Bole Hadippa. "Working with Rani was absolutely fabulous. Despite speculations about our onscreen chemistry, I feel lucky to have worked with an actor of her caliber. Sometimes, when you do unexpected things, it surprises people in a positive way," says the actor who is working for the first time with Yash Raj Films.

The overjoyed Kapur
"Kaminey was an out-of-the-box film and certainly one of the most challenging roles I have played in my career so far. I am overjoyed with the success of the film. As an actor, I believe, if you have a few roles that people remember you for, you have accomplished your goal. Now, the challenge that lies ahead of me is to improve my work. If in future, I get a role that surpasses my performance in Kaminey, I would definitely try my best to do it."

On Rani as Veeru
"The most entertaining scenes in Dil Bole Hadippa are between me and Veeru. If I had to choose from a funny perspective, it would be Veeru but from a romantic perspective, it would definitely be Rani," asserts the Kaminey star.

The laughter challenge
Shahid left no stone unturned to entertain the audience with his wit and humour. When asked about which role he enjoyed playing the most - Charlie, Guddu or Rohan, the actor diligently said, "I don't like to choose between my characters. I like all the characters I have played so far…but if I had to choose…can it be Veeru?" Adding some spice to the conversation, the actor joked, "I felt like Guddu working in the film. Rani was very much like Charlie."

Hail you Bollywood! Post-recession phase seems to have inlayed the B-town with instantaneous transformations over the screens. Hit or flop: you’ve got to put these things aside and appreciate the adeptness of such moviemakers spelling new-fangled recitals.

It was much revealing with previous as well this weeks’ multiple releases drawn out any innovative themes. On the pars, it really matters how audiences have perceived their deliverances. This sort of impedimenta stops these self-braggy flicks from getting categorized under ‘proficient shows’.

But, FOX takes off with a brilliant effort by Deepak Tijori for his convincing narration. Of course, it’s more salient for an edge-of-seat thriller to have a sleek screenplay and this filmmaker scores 3.5/5 on it.

FOX centers on a young, successful criminal lawyer, Arjun Kapoor (Arjun Rampal) whose knowledge and aggressive interpretation of the law makes him a name to reckon with... He is reputed to have never lost a case and can get anyone acquitted, no matter what the crime. No wonder, then, criminals swear by his name.

Arjun loves being famous and successful and spends little time thinking about the moral issues related to his work. After years of saving criminals from punishment, one day, torn with guilt, he decides to quit his law practice and change for good. However, someone seems to be unwilling to let him go so easily.

Now, Arjun is in a race to save himself, and must use the help of his girlfriend Urvashi (Sagarika Ghatge) and a local Goa police officer Yash Deshmukh (Sunny Deol) before it’s too late.

Filmmaker Deepak Tijori requires special mention. The screenplay is so gripping that it holds everything intact in places. Precisely, the narration is sleek on more parts. On the pars, Deepak looses out at few intervals. There isn’t any need for songs where it throws down restlessness at parts. In terms, Fox has starts off with not-so interesting ingredients and slowly gets into the track. But things are let loose out of control once the on tenterhooks. Nigam Bomzan’s cinematography looks spectacular with eye-catching visuals. Indeed, he adds more to the fast-paced moments with innovative placement of angles.

On the note of performances, Sunny Deol turns spotlifhts on his part. The actor gets along with a cool and controlled spell of show. Arjun Rampal strikes much with his casual act as in his previous films. But Udita Goswami’s characterization is completely disappointing. Indeed, the actress fails to come up with a commendable show. Vipul Gupta makes a convincing start and has a long way to go ahead.

When it comes to mark the ‘final take’, yes ‘FOX’ has some interesting attributes to watch out for. For better, Deepak could’ve reworked on script and made it yet more convincingly.

Verdict: Kill your time on it.

After Sonu Nigam it is the veteran singer Sukhwinder Singh who has stepped into acting. Sukhwinder broke the news yesterday in front of media with the director and co-stars of his debut acting venture titled Khudi Ko Kar Buland Itna. The film has been produced and directed by debutant Jagbir Dahiya. Sukhwinder has also lent his voice to all the songs in the film.

Sukhwinder has in his credit some brilliant songs with big banners in the tinsel down. However, to work with new player in the industry is not everyone’s cup of tea. Exclaims, the director Jagbir Dahiya, who was all praises for the singer, “I was taken by surprise, and glad at the same time, as soon as Sukhwinder showed interest in my film. Very few celebs in the tinsel town today can be so generous to believe in someone and give them a chance.” To which, Sukhwinder adds, “Big or small banners have never been my criteria for choosing films. I loved the very concept and nothing could stop me to go ahead.”

Well, Sukhwinder seems to be implementing the very title Khudi Ko Kar Buland Itna in real life too. He has indisputably left an indelible mark in his singing career. As far as a career in acting is concerned, all we can say is let’s wait and watch.

Even as Love Aaj Kal continues to run in theaters, Rishi Kapoor is now making a comeback as a central protagonist in Chintu Ji. Interestingly, the film's name is derived from Rishi Kapoor's nickname - 'Chintu'. Produced by Kaleidoscope Entertainment, the film - also starring Priyanshu Chatterjee and Kulraj Randhawa - is a comedy and is directed by debutant Ranjit Kapoor. As the film gears up for it's release this Friday, Rishi Kapoor talks to Joginder Tuteja about Chintu Ji, which as per him is 'part fiction, part reality and part illusion'.

What is Chintu Ji all about? Is it an autobiography of the man called Rishi Kapoor who regaled the audience for three decades in a row (70s to 90s) as a leading hero?
No, the film is not about the journey of Rishi Kapoor, a filmstar. It is about the moment in the life of this film star where he tries to do something new. It's his stint in politics which is covered in Chintu Ji. It was nice to see shades of my own life in the film's narrative though.

Politics? Sounds interesting. Can you please elaborate?
Chintu Ji is about a filmstar who wants to contest elections from his hometown but isn't quite serious about politics. At heart, he is still a brat that he has been throughout his life and his only motive is to mint money and make merry. Ironically, his entry in his village only ends up making life better for all there, even though it is by default than design.

Does that mean that we are looking at an out and out tongue in cheek entertain?
There is an entertainment quotient for sure. But then there is also some message that comes with the film. It states that if Government takes care of your basic necessities in villages and small towns as well, the inhabitants there won't be compelled to leave these places and go to cities with dreams of mega bucks. If at all there are enough jobs to keep people occupied and well off in villages, they will not be forced to leave their native place. Its matter of basic amenities like electricity, water, mobile facilities etc. being made available, that's it.

So are there some reforms that eventually do come into play in the film?
They do happen though unintentionally (laughs). My character doesn't quite have any intentions of reforming the life of the villagers. However, he does eventually bring in a turnaround even though it is done unknowingly. The film's script has been put together quite innovatively because it's quite a difficult task to build a story around a real life personality, add on elements of fiction to it and make it a cinematic engaging experience as well. The film also reflects the socio-economic-political state of India Today.

There has been quite some stir being created ever since it was revealed that Russian artist Kseniya Ryabinkina, who played Raj Kapoor's love interest (a trapeze artist) in the second chapter of Mera Naam Joker, is a part of Chintu Ji too.
It was way back in 1970 when I played the role of younger Raj Kapoor in Mera Naam Joker. It is interesting that 40 years later, I am coming along with her. Incidentally this will be only her second Hindi film since she appeared in Mera Naam Joker. In Chintu Ji, she has a very pivotal role to play as she brings along immense metamorphosis in the life of the character that I play.

In Mera Naam Joker, you had your scenes mainly with Simi Grewal while it was Raj Kapoor who had closer interaction with Kseniya Ryabinkina. Does Chintu Ji see the two of you sharing screen space together?
Yes, we do. It was a surreal experience because I was just a kid in Mera Naam Joker. I guess it was a great idea to get her on board in Chintu Ji which is a film that is part fiction, part reality and part illusion when it comes to it being based on my life.

Though Chintu Ji has been ready for a while, the film is now seeing a sudden release.
If a film is good then it will run. Also, it is a genuinely different film and carries certain spunk to it. It comes with a lot of potential to do well after word of mouth. Even though it's a small film, it comes with a good idea. I am very positive about its prospects.

It is not surprising that Shahid has increased his fee after the success of his latest hit Kaminey. The actor demanded a whopping Rs 15 Crores from Subhash Ghai to star in his latest movie. Yes you hear it correct it's 15 Crores.

This has forced Shubhash Ghai to look for a fresh face for his upcoming movie. It may be recalled that after the success of his movie Jab We Met, Shahid had hiked his fees to Rs 5 Crores per movie. You may wonder what has gone wrong with Salman Khan when he said that he doesn't watch his girlfriend Katrina Kaif's films. In fact, his feedback would be invaluable but he has his own reason for shying away from her films. The reason is - he doesn't like to see her wearing sexy and small skirt.

Salman admitted that he doesn't watch Katrina's film. But why? He said that he once watched her film and she was wearing a small skirt, which he didn't quite like. Meanwhile, he is aware that he has to let it go sometimes. He is left with no option but to keep away from such films. He added that he could make out the genre of her film from the promos and stay away if necessary.

The reports that Salman was guiding Katrina was right as he admitted that he did help her initially. However, he said that he doesn't interfere in her work anymore, as she's grown up and has good scene of choice.

Salman said that Katrina used to ask him to check out a couple of her scenes due her problem with dubbing but he has stopped it now, as he doesn't want to be labelled as an aggressive boyfriend who barges into his girlfriend's sets.

Some have written her off, some say her crown is under threat. But Aishwarya Rai Bachchan is oblivious to such comments.

With her trademark smile in place, the graceful Bachchan bahu set about business, charming one and all during her recent trip to the city. The actor glowed despite reports of suffering from swine flu. “As the head of the house, Pa voiced his concerns on his blog about my health. He said I had flu like symptoms. Soon, word spread that I had swine flu!” said Ash when questioned about her health. But like everything else, these rumours too were put to rest. “Pa had to then clarify that it was just a normal flu,” said Ash while accepting that the Big B’s blog is indeed quite a ‘hit’. “For me it was Pa blogging because he was concerned and away from home at that time. But for others, it was like a confirmation of sorts that Amitabh Bachchan says Ash has the swine flu!”

Apart from shooting for Raavan, Endhiran, Guzaarish and Action Replay, Ash also has other professional commitments to honour which takes up a lot of her time. But hey, she’s not complaining. After all, she is the face of some of the most popular brands across the world. “I’ve always been very selective about the brands I endorse. There’s no rat race. Every endorsement has a story behind it. The bottomline is, I don’t like endorsing brands which are anywhere and everywhere,” explains Ash.

And what about rumours of a jewellery brand dropping her for Katrina Kaif? “I would like to say this loud and clear; I chose not to renew my contract with the jewellery brand,” affirms the actor setting the record straight. “I had a contract with another brand under which that particular jewellers came. Once they parted ways, I decided not to endorse them anymore,” she goes on to explain.

Taking the opportunity to put to rest the talk about her being dropped by other brands due to her age, Ash said, “No one every dropped me. I chose not to renew certain contracts. Like the one with the cola brand. Post marriage I decided not to endorse them anymore as Pa and Abhishek were endorsing the rival cola brand. I didn’t want any confusion in the consumer’s mind,” she quipped .

With film and endorsement offers pouring in, Ash is indeed a busy woman just like she was a few years ago. Unlike others, marriage doesn’t seem to have slowed her down. “Earlier, it was tough for a heroine to get work after marriage. Their so-called brand value would depreciate. That didn’t happen with me, as I've always aspired to push the envelope,” she explains.

But she does not take the credit for this alone. “I have to thank the professionals I’ve worked with. They were not regressive and changed with times,” she says. And unlike other contemporaries, Ash always seems pretty secure and confident of her career. “And why not?” she asks going on to add that, “Throughout my career I’ve never said things like, ‘I’m not ready for marriage now’, or ‘marriage will happen only after five or six years’. When I was ready for marriage, everybody knew. I’ve never given escapist quotes.”
But now that she is married into the first family of Bollywood, doesn’t she want to take it slow? “I have a secret pride, you know. I’ve always wanted to work after marriage and I couldn’t see why that should change after I tied the knot,” says Ash, while adding immediately, “Don’t misunderstand me. I’m not a hardcore feminist. I’m a humanist.”

The down-to-earth superstar rewinds, “I’ve had a long and wonderful journey. My photographer friends and others have pointed out that I have improved over the years.” But that did not come easy. “Earlier when a girl signed a film opposite a certain hero, it made big news. But I was not satisfied with just that, I wanted more. There were times when I signed a film and it turned out to be something else. I then brought it something different and new to the industry that protected the rights of the heroine like the MOUs and other contractual changes.”

Ask her if any of it was tough and she says, “Well I’ve constantly learnt and improved as an actor. My efforts have definitely made things a lot easier for my ilk.”

Salman Khan interested in buying IPL team

Bollywood star Salman Khan wants to own a cricket team. The actor has met IPL chairman Lalit Modi in Mumbai to understand the bidding process.

According to reports Bollywood star Ajay Devgun also wants to buy new IPL team.

Two new IPL teams are to be introduced in 2011. Early reports say Khan is interested in bidding for the Nagpur or Kochi team.

"He was interested to know what it takes to own a team, what's the process, when it will be initiated and what's the timeline for it. I think he is a serious buyer," Modi said.

Last year, the average bid was 150 million dollars per team, so Salman will need a serious amount of cash.

Suchitra Krishnamoorthy faces heat over hiring minor as maid

MUMBAI: Close on the heels of a national outrage over the brutal physical abuse of a 10-year-old maid allegedly by small-time TV actor Urvashi Dhanorkar, three more cases have surfaced.

These cases came to light at a Mantralaya review meeting on Tuesday. NGOs told the labour ministry that they had rescued children from the houses of actors Suchitra Krishnamoorthy, Laxmi and yesteryear heroine Huma Khan.

State labour secretary Kavita Gupta said: ‘‘These names were given to us by the NGOs who were present for the meeting in the Urvashi Dhanorkar case.’’ Krishnamoorthy has denied these allegations.

Gupta added: ‘‘The three children who were rescued, all of them under 14, were Naranthi, a Meghalaya girl working at Suchitra Krishnamoorthy’s house, Laila Khan from TV actor Laxmi’s house in Malad, and Shanti Vishwakarma who worked at Huma Khan’s house in Mira Road.’’

What’s surprising, though, is that the labour ministry was unable to give TOI the names of the NGOs who were responsible for bring these cases to light nor was it able to clarify the identity of the actor Laxmi. ‘‘I will give you the details of all these cases on Wednesday morning,’’ said Nawab Malik, state labour minister.

Bachchan, Dutt at loggerheads in 'Aladin'

Amitabh Bachchan and Sanjay Dutt, known for their tremendous screen presence, are at loggerheads in 'Aladin', an adventure film in which the Big B plays a genie.

In recent times, the two stars have worked together in half a dozen odd films like 'Shoot-Out At Lokhandwala', 'Eklavya - The Royal Guard', 'Deewar - Let's Bring Our Heroes Home', 'Viruddh' and 'Hum Kisi Se Kum Nahin'.

However, the one which clearly stands out amongst the crowd is 'Kaante' [2002] which when released seven years back had given a different dimension to their on-screen rivalry.

Now the two veteran actors will be at loggerheads again in Eros International's 'Aladin'.

"Both the actors are fighting it out in 'Aladin'. It's a different energy altogether when actors like these are pitted against each other. This time around it is 'Genius - The Genie' (Big B) v/s 'Ringmaster' (Sanjay Dutt)," Director Sujoy Ghosh said.

'Kaante' was known for Sanjay Dutt's dialogue - 'Major, Tu Sirf Bhaukega Ya Kaatega Bhi [Major, are you only going to bark or even bite]?' In real life, Sanjay is known for respecting the Big B, he said.

Bachchan in one of his blog had mentioned how Sanjay stops smoking and even hides his lighted cigarate if he (Bachchan) walks into his room.

"When two actors like these are pitted opposite each other, there are bound to be fireworks. Now whether these would be through power packed dialogues or some intense scenes or symbolic gestures is something that would be for audiences to see once the film arrives in October. However, I can assure that those looking for a man-to-man combat, whether physically or verbally, won't be disappointed", said Sujoy who is said to have created enough dramatic sequences featuring the two.

Gowariker’s sister sings for Priyanka in ‘What’s Your Raashee?’

Mumbai, July 28 (IANS) Filmmaker Ashutosh Gowariker has roped in his sister to croon a song that will be picturised on Priyanka Chopra in his forthcoming movie “What’s Your Raashee?” He hopes audiences appreciate her voice.

“My sister Aslesha sang the song ‘Aa le chal’ for my film. I could’ve brought her vocals out earlier, but there’s a right time for everything. In ‘What’s Your Raashee?’ I had the right situation for Aslesha,” Gowariker told IANS.

“The song appears when Priyanka plays Nandini, the Scorpio. I hope listeners like my sister’s voice,” said the director who made films like “Lagaan”, “Swades” and “Jodhaa Akbar”.

The film’s leading man Hurman Baweja was asked to sing few lines for the same song, but he didn’t know who the female singer was. When he reached the studio for the recording, Gowariker and music composer Sohail Sen played him the track and he was completely bowled over by the beautiful female voice.

“I was completely bowled over. My god! What a voice. And I couldn’t recognise it. It was not Alka Yagnikji or Shreya Ghoshal and it was certainly not Lataji (Lata Mangeshkar). I asked who it was and I was told it was a new singer. I recorded my portion with much nervousness. Imagine… catching up to a voice of that calibre,” said Hurman.

It was only later that Hurman got to know the singer was Gowariker’s sister Aslesha who is a lawyer by profession.

“I didn’t know Gowariker belongs to a family of singers. His mother Kishori Gowariker is a trained vocalist. Gowariker sings and so does his sister. So I was basically asked to pitch my voice with a singer who knows her job,” said the actor.

Mumbai, June 23 (IANS) Bollywood actor Shiney Ahuja was not drunk when he allegedly raped his domestic help, according to the forensic reports, a police official said Tuesday.

'The report mentions that the accused was not drunk and in his full senses at the time of the incident,' Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone VI) Niket Kaushik said.

Shiney's blood samples had been taken soon after his arrest and sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory to verify his claim that he may have committed the crime while drunk or after taking drugs or some other intoxicants.

However, the actor's wife Anupam had declared last week that Shiney does not drink or smoke.

Police are still awaiting the test reports from FSL on other articles seized from Shiney's residence for evidence, and the DNA tests on the semen stains recovered.

Shiney's domestic help had June 14 lodged a complaint with the Oshiwara Police Station, alleging she had been raped by the actor.

Shiney was arrested and a court sent him to police custody. He is presently in judicial custody.

A team of the National Commission of Women (NCW) rushed to Mumbai and met all the parties concerned, including the victim and her family members.

Following the NCW team's visit, Chief Minister Ashok Chavan announced that the Shiney rape case would be transferred to a fast track court soon.

The rumour mills started working overtime after Butler, whom she met at the launch of the Atlantis hotel in Dubai last year, was quoted as saying in a leading daily: 'I don't mind getting married to an Indian girl. Too bad Priyanka already has a boyfriend'.

Now, who that boyfriend is, remains to be known.

Though rumours of a romantic liaison between Shahid and Priyanka have been in the grapevine lately after their joint appearance at filmmaker Tarun Mansukhani's birthday party in Mumbai last week, neither has confirmed the development.

Says Deepika, "My father has just started an organization to help promising individual sports persons. I've decided to be associated with it. I want to contribute not just financially but also bybeing there for it physically. I'm dying to do a sports film. But no one has offered me any so far."

Deepika moves away from her Lucy Lieu act in Chandni Chowk To China to do a very 'today' film about a contemporary relationship in Imtiaz Ali's film with Saif Ali Khan.

And the extremely contemporary film often found Deepika drawing references from her own relationship.

"It's a very contemporary take on relationships, the way couples feel in this day age. It's a very unusual film. Very real. It will connect with contemporary couples. I sure did connect with it."

Deepika is thrilled to be compared with Lucy Lieu. "I come from a very athletic background. And I wanted to do an action scenes. To be doing somersaults and flips for all those guys who supervised the stunts for Uma Thurman in Kill Bill ... was a big treat."

She did injure her ankle, permanently she thought. "But it has healed miraculously. And I'm raring to do another action film."

Like Kareena, Deepika has decided to stay mum about her personal life. "The only time Ranbir and I have spoken is about each other is when we wanted to confess ourlove. Then they've been bringing us together, splitting us up ... I'm very secure and happy in our relationship."

Sidelining all speculation about Ranbir Kapoor's mother being disapproving of her, Deepika says, "I've only met her a couple of times and hardly interacted with Ranbir's parents. I've the highest regard for her. Ranbir and I will get to know each other's parents when the time is right. At the moment we're both focused on our careers."

About being called a female Akshay Kumar Deepika laughs, "That was picked up by a journalist who asked me if I wanted to be a female Akshay Kumar. If my words are twisted and played around with, what can I say? I'm just here to enjoy myself. Now I've another chance to be a female Akshay Kumar when we start Sajid Khan's Houseful."

It's choc-a-bloc routine for Deepika.But she says she has time for everything. "Time management is something I learnt very young. I make sure I work very hard. I also get time to relax. We're in a business where we need to get look good."

Then she adds, "But I'm glad people don't think of me as a decorative doll. I take my own decisions on what films to do. Ranbir and I don't discuss work."

A recent trip to Tirupathi with her family also gave the actress a big high, and not just spiritually. "It's nice to know that people recognize me even in the South. We were obviously there for a religious visit. People were extremely well-behaved. They did of course take photographs and ask for autographs.I'd have been disappointed if they didn't."

'Dilli 6waala ladka aa gaya'

You have to be lucky to be chosen from a platoon of 5,000 kids vying for the same role - Sonam Kapoor's brother in Delli 6. Delhi boy Vinayak Doval certainly got lucky.

He can now be seen running around Chandni Chowk and play pranks with Sonam and Abhishek Bachchan in the promos of the film. A student of Bluebells school, Doval dreams of becoming the future SRK. Right now he's relishing all the attention he is getting at school: "In school I have become like a superstar.

When my school mates see me they say, 'Delli 6waala ladka aa gaya'." The past few months have been unforgettable for him.

He says, "Sonam is my didi. I used to call her ma'am but she told me to call her didi.

Abhishek is like a friend. He played pranks with us and also raced with us.

Rakesh sir was very gentle and not at all serious, in fact he cracked jokes all the time." He goes on to add, "Once I was feeling very cold, and Abhishek gave me his coat to wear and Sonam didi is very pretty and caring too.

" Ask about his take on the film and he quips, "It is a film on Delhi, on every bindas Delhiwaala." As a Delhi- ite, who loves his home city very much, he enjoyed being part of the film more than anything.

New Delhi, Feb 6 (PTI) Actress Raima Sen who plays a homemaker aspiring to be a singer in her next flick "Mere Khawabon Mein Jo Aaye" says she is still waiting for her ideal man. "I am still waiting for my fantasy man," says the actress who was in the capital recently to promote the film, which releases today.

First-time director Madhureeta Anand has cast Raima as Maya, a homemaker who dreams of being a singer but is regularly demoralised by her husband played by Arbaaz Khan. Circumstances however, lead her to fantasise about an ideal man, who would boost her morale and help in realising her ambition.

"It is not only housewives who sacrifice their dreams at the altar of family life but anybody who has a dream will be able to identify with Maya," Raima told reporters here. The actress who was noticed for her role in Bollywood with "Honeymoon Travels" feels that her sister Riya Sen who is still struggling to get a foothold in the industry, just did not get the right opportunities.

"Riya did not get the right opportunity. We both are acting together in Rituparno Ghosh's next where her acting calibre has definitely been explored.

'Delhi-6 is much bigger than Rang De Basanti'

Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra is in Chennai to give the final musical touch to his third directorial vehicle, Delhi-6.

There are very high expectations for the film which, among many things, is a love story but more importantly the story of a complex inner journey. Mehra's previous film, Rang De Basanti, was a critical and box-office hit.

I know the film has a very broad appeal and could be a big success with overseas Indians partly because Roshan [the character played by Abhishek Bachchan] is a young man who has grown up in the melting pot that is America and comes to India to leave his grandmother [Waheeda Rehman], who wants to spend her last years in the country of her birth. I also expect this film to strike a chord with people of all ages across India and in the Diaspora.

This is a film of many inner journeys, particularly that of Roshan's. Even before I began shooting the film, I felt I was going on a very difficult, and often a dark journey. Om Puri, who called me in the middle of the night soon after going through the script, told me so, but of course he also has faith in me. And that is why he did this film.

I was also testing myself in this film to see if we could make a Hindi language film that had world class appeal, that it could be a piece of world cinema.

'Dev D' - a punk and grunge version of 'Devdas'

New Delhi, Feb 2 (IANS) Nine cinematic versions of Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay's immortal love story 'Devdas' have been released since the first silent film in 1928. Now Anurag Kashyap is ready with the 10th version, titled 'Dev D' releasing Friday - a fresh, contemporary take on the romance that breaks all its typecasts.

'I scripted the film on the basis of news headlines on the Gen-X because I wanted to take the angle of today's youth in the film,' Kashyap told IANS over phone from Mumbai.

Produced by UTV Bindaas, the film has Abhay Deol in the title role. Newcomers Mahi Gill and Kalki Koechlin play the female leads.

While the previous adaptations were set in Kolkata and the protagonist was shown as a zamindar's son, Kashyap's film is set in rural Punjab and also explores the dingy, morbid and dark underbelly of Delhi. For a change, the protagonist Dev (Abhay) is a rich industrialist's son.

Dev, who was sent to London, returns to his hometown and his childhood sweetheart Paro (Mahi) after 12 years. But his life is turned upside down when he finds out that Paro is married off to someone else.

While Paro picks up the thread of her life and moves on with grit and dignity, Dev, soaked in self-pity, drowns himself in darkness and hopelessness.

While mourning his lost love, Dev comes across a prostitute called Chanda (Kalki) who lives life on the edge. After a disastrous MMS scandal, she is disowned by her family and is forced into isolation.

Kashyap captures the sensibilities, conflict, aggression and recklessness of youth today through these characters.

The music of the film can already be heard in discotheques and cars in cities. Its 18 tracks include Rajasthani, Punjabi and Awadhi folk numbers.

Abhay is very confident about the film.

' 'Devdas' has been made before, but this one has a very new, fresh and out of the box approach. Nobody had ever thought of making 'Devdas' in this contemporary way,' said Abhay.

''Dev D' adopts an unusual and contemporary approach and I think that is exactly what will work for the film because it will be like a revelation to the people. It's always good to turn a stereotype image and experiment with it,' he added.

While the 1955 version by Bimal Roy and the last remake in 2002 by Sanjay Leela Bhansali won audiences' hearts, what is to be seen is whether Kashyap's modern version of the twisted Bengali romance manages to strike a chord with film buffs.

Amitabh bags World Economic Forum award

The Crystal Award is to be conferred on the veteran actor at a ceremony at Davos, Switzerland later Saturday. Noted Kuchipudi and Bharatnatyam dancer Mallika Sarabhai will also be hnoured for outstanding excellence in the field of culture.

The event will be attended by former British prime minister Tony Blair, Microsoft's Bill Gates and leaders from several countries among others.

'I had no idea there is so much visibility for Indian cinema in other parts of the world. This is just so amazing. This recognition, this attention, this awareness to our world and our craft is very overwhelming,' wrote Big B on his blog.

The 39th annual gathering of economic leaders at Davos will focus on ways to ward off recession and save jobs amidst a financial crisis in the world markets.

After receiving the Crystal Award and staying on for a day at Davos, Amitabh will fly to New York to attend the premiere of 'Pink Panther 2' on Feb 3 along with son Abhishek and daughter-in-law Aishwarya, who stars in the film.

Emraan Hashmi ready for 'Raaz 3' and fatherhood

Mumbai, Jan 29 (IANS) His 'Raaz 2' has got an encouraging opening and actor Emraan Hashmi is all set to work in the third instalment of the spooky thriller. He also feels secure enough to start a family now.

'We're trying for a baby and we should be parents by next year. One is never prepared for fatherhood. And if I wait to be fully prepared, it will never happen. But I'm getting into the mindset now,' Emraan, who is married to Parveen Shahani, told IANS.

Talking about 'Raaz 3', he said: 'Yes we're on,' said Emraan. 'The third part will also be directed by Mohit Suri and I'll play the lead. The rest of the details are yet to be decided. The cast of the second 'Raaz' film was totally new. And I think I'm going to be the only actor common to 'Raaz 2' and '3'.'

Emraan feels vindicated by the audiences' response to 'Raaz 2', which also starred Kangana Ranaut and newcomer Adhyayan Suman.

'My wife kept telling me I should try the genre. I had never done horror before. It's believed in the trade that horror films open well and then soon fizzle out. But then it was also believed that a film looking at the seamier side of cricket ('Jannat') would never do well.

'I like to walk the lonely path. That's why you don't see me at parties and functions. Maybe that's why I play the part of the loner and watch another guy take away the girl I love,' Emran said, drawing attention to his loser-lover's role in 'Awarapan' and now 'Raaz 2'.

Emraan, who has been lying low during the publicity of 'Raaz 2' thanks to all the focus on real-life pair Kangana-Adhyayan, says he didn't feel left out.

'Kangana and Adhyayan were a real-life couple. I can't concoct an affair just to be noticed. I was confident my work would speak for itself. Sure enough I believe people clap when I come on screen the first time. I do have fan base, though it might be small,' he said.

'Ghajini' producer teams up with Ram Gopal Varma for 'R

New Delhi, Jan 22 (IANS) Madhu Mantena, co-producer of 'Ghajini', has joined hands with his first cousin Ram Gopal Varma for the latter's forthcoming media-based film 'Rann', which has Amitabh Bachchan in an important role.

'I could have basked in the glory of the success of 'Ghajini', but thought it wise to move ahead with other projects,' Mantena said. 'Besides, Abbas Tyrewala's '1-800-Love', starring John Abraham, I am now also a part of Ram Gopal Varma's 'Rann',' Mantena added.

Confirming partnership with Mantena, Varma said: 'I did not call Mantena on board for 'Rann' because of 'Ghajini' success. We always wanted to do a film together. Also, I needed someone to look after the monetary aspects and there could be nobody better than my cousin Madhu.'

'Munnabhai' Sanjay Dutt wins over crowds at Samajwadi Party rally

Lucknow, Jan 17 (IANS) Amidst beating of drums, blowing of trumpets and slogans of 'Munnabhai jeetega' filling the air, Bollywood star and Samajwadi Party's Lok Sabha election candidate Sanjay Dutt arrived here Saturday to a rousing welcome.

Thousands of people, including party activists and the actor's fans, jostled for space to catch a glimpse of Dutt, who arrived at the Samajwadi Party office on the Vikramaditya Marg after a roadshow.

Donning the typical attire of a Samajwadi activist with a red cap on his head and sporting a green party scarf over his kurta pyjama, the film star's cavalcade snaked through important thoroughfares of the Uttar Pradesh capital.

He flashed the victory signal from an open jeep all through his road show that ended at the party office.

He passed through Hazratgang, Charbaag, Movaiya and Alambagh areas.

When asked during his road show what would be his poll plank, he grinned: 'Surely, it would be Gandhigiri (practising non-violent methods).'

A bearded Dutt was flanked by his wife Manyata and party activists at the rally.

The Bollywood actor won over the crowds by repeatedly referring to 'Gandhigiri' and said he would give 'jadu ki jhappi' (magical embrace) to the people of the constituency - referring to his mega hit film 'Lage Raho Munnabhai'.

'I love the people here, and will do my best to work for them,' Dutt told the ecstatic crowds, as they pushed and edged each other to try and get near the star and shake hands with him.

Dutt Friday night had said in Mumbai that he would contest the polls from Lucknow on a Samajwadi Party ticket, ignoring the disapproval of his sister and Congress MP Priya Dutt.

The Samajwadi Party had earlier this week named Dutt as their candidate. The seat at present is held by veteran Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

Mumbai, Jan 12 (IANS) Bollywood music director A.R. Rahman Monday became the first Indian to win the Golden Globe Award, for best original musical score in Danny Boyle's movie 'Slumdog Millionaire'. The honour bestowed on the maestro has brought much cheer to the Indian film industry.

'The Golden Globe is a coveted award and it is a rare honour for an Indian music director. By winning it, competing with composers from around the world, Rahman has not only proved his worth, but has also conveyed to the world that, given a chance, an Indian music director can deservedly vie with any composer in the world,' fellow composer Anu Malik told IANS.

Rahman won the prestigious award for his musical score in the song 'Jai Ho', for which Gulzar penned the lyrics. The song is a typical Rahman number and the composer stuck to his signature style while composing it.

Sukhwinder Singh, who has sung the song, told IANS: 'Rahman has churned out great songs even in the past but he did not get an award so I feel that he truly deserves this one. I am very happy for him and when he comes back to India, I will meet him. I'm sure he will definitely ask me, 'Are you happy?'. The song 'Jai Ho' is a very naughty and playful number; it has a good combination of poetry and music and and I enjoyed singing it.'

'The international recognition that Rahman has earned for himself makes every Indian proud. He deserves it more than anybody else for his wholehearted dedication to music. It's a rare honour. I congratulate Rahman,' said director Aziz Mirza.

'Slumdog Millionaire' bagged four Golden Globe awards. Apart from Rahman, the movie won the awards - considered a precursor to the Oscars - for best motion picture, best screenplay and best director.

That 'Slumdog Millionaire' will sweep the Golden Globe Awards was a foregone conclusion after critics from around the world, Hollywood in particular, hailed the film.

Most Indians expected Rahman, known for scoring soul-stirring music in Bollywood and other Indian films, to emerge victorious. And that was exactly what happened Sunday night, making the 43-year-old music composer the first Indian to bag a Golden Globe.

'We are very proud of Rahman. He is an internationally recognised music genius and Golden Globes is a significant win for the music fraternity in India too. Though I haven't worked with him as much as others, I admire him from a distance,' said singer Shaan.

'Rahman is truly the king. He is one of the finest composers in the country. He has carried India's name on the global map and has achieved something, which no one from this country could do. He deserves every award that exists,' singer-composer Shankar Mahadevan said.

Based on Vikas Swarup's novel 'Q & A', the film starring Dev Patel, Freida Pinto and Anil Kapoor, is releasing in India Jan 23.

Rahman got his first big break in Mani Ratnam's 'Roja' and later composed music for many films in southern India. His first full-fledged Bollywood project was Ram Gopal Varma's hit 'Rangeela'. Most of the songs, including 'Tanha Tanha' and 'Hai Rama' and 'Yaaro sun lo Zara', were chartbusters. After that there was no looking back for him.

Later, Rahman became a name to reckon with through his soulful compositions in 'Dil Seâ€¦', '1947 Earth', 'Taal', 'Lagaan', 'Guru', 'Rang De Basanti' and 'Jodhaa Akbar'.

Rahman not only won hearts in India, but also made a mark on the global music scene. He got his first international break when Andrew Lloyd Webber invited him to compose music for Broadway musical 'Bombay Dreams', which won him immense international fame. He also composed for the stage adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien's 'Lord Of The Rings' that premiered in Canada in 2006 and in London in 2007.

Rahman launched his first full-fledged orchestra last year. It has been named 'Global Music' and is the first homegrown orchestra.

After winning the Golden Globe, Rahman is looking forward to bagging an Oscar for his soundtrack for 'Slumdog Milloinaire'.

'For the people of India to get an Oscar is a big thing. So for their sake, more than mine, I hope my song 'Jai ho' and my music score in 'Slumdog Millionaire' win the Oscar,' said Rahman, whose latest hit back home was 'Ghajini'.

He is all set to enthral his fans with his upcoming projects 'Delhi-6' and 'Blue'.

New Delhi, Jan 11 (IANS) Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan will attend the London premiere of Akshay Kumar's comic caper 'Chandni Chowk To China' (CC2C) Monday.

Amitabh, who is in London for make-up tests for his forthcoming venture 'Pa', received an invitation from Akshay for the premiere over a phone call from Toronto, Canada.

'Akshay called at 5.30 a.m. and said, 'CC2C is premiering at Leicester Square, London, on Jan 12th. I shall be honoured if you could come and join us.' I told him I shall,' Amitabh said in a posting on his blog www.bigb.bigadda.com Sunday.

He wrote that Akshay warned him, 'Just don't bring your brains and thinking cap along.'

London is the fourth destination of the grand international premiere of 'Chandni Chowk To China', directed by Nikhil Advani. It has already been showcased in Los Angeles, New York and Toronto.

Releasing Jan 16 in India, the film will be next premiered in Dubai and Bangkok.

PURI: It's not the college-going trend-conscious youngsters alone who are enchanted by Aamir Khan's new crew cut hair style. The Ghajini hairstyle has also become a rage among priests at the world famous Jagannath temple here.

Aamir Khan's attention-grabbing haircut has prompted nearly 30 young priests at the 12th century shrine to go for the latest fashion statement. Garbed in traditional attire (dhoti), these priests, who have little exposure to the glamour world, can now be differentiated easily because of their Ghajini haircut.

And they are proud of it. "I am not a big fan of Aamir Khan. But I liked his hairstyle in Ghajini . So I went for it," said Santosh Kumar Dash, a priest. Everyday Santosh serves the presiding deities of Jagannath temple by beating drums when ‘bhog' is offered. "More than 30 young priests at the 12th century shrine are sporting the look now,'' Dash added. The priests can be easily differentiated on account of their haircut.

"When I cut my hair two days ago everybody in the temple looked strangely at me. I felt a bit awkward then. But after looking at so many similar hairdos around me I feel comfortable now,'' he added.

Siba Shankar Panda, another priest said the devotees were also stunned to see the Ghajini craze within temple premises. "When we escorted some devotees into the shrine they stared at us blankly. They could not believe their eyes because they never expected a priest emulate a Bollywood actor. I told them I did it just for fun,'' Panda said.

When asked whether the act could create a negative impression among devotees, Panda shrugged off the idea. "On the other hand it is attracting more pilgrims everyday. My business is not suffering any loss,'' he added.

Honey Guru, another priest has become a regular visitor to the gym after he got the haircut few days ago. "I was impressed by Aamir Khan's eight packs in the movie. I want one as well. If others can adopt new fashion trends, why can't priests do the same?''

Pak singer's promotional song removed from Hindi film

Bedika New Delhi, Jan 8 (PTI) The producers of the Hindi film 'Jugaad', a satire on the sealing drive in Delhi, have removed the promotional video featuring Pakistani singer Adeel. The popular Pakistani artiste says he had worked hard on the video and felt "devastated" on being informed that his song and video featured himself was chopped from the promotions.

The action is being seen as a fallout of Indo-Pak tension in the wake of terror attacks on Mumbai. "I am feeling hurt and depressed.

I don't know why they did this to me. Mumbai is like a second home to me and I have receive much love and affection from the people of the city," the singer told PTI over phone from Lahore.

Adeel's song 'Kise Awaaz Dun' in 'Jugaad' was supposed to be promotional song for the film and the popular Pakistani singer had even shot a video for it. However, producer Sanddeep Kapur scrapped the song from promotions.

Adeel has also been left out from the music release of the film in Mumbai last week. "We artistes have nothing to do with it.

We, like the most of Indians are a victim of terror attacks too and the public of both sides understand this," Adeel said. The film starring Manoj Bajpai and Hrishita Bhatt is scheduled for release in February.

Meanwhile, Kapoor said, "Adeel is a dear friend but we had to remove the song from the movie as we can no longer ignore the situation. This is my way of saying that we are hurt.

New Delhi, Jan 8 (IANS) It has users in 133 countries and connects them through Bollywood songs. SunoMusic, a website, allows surfers to choose their favourite numbers from an extensive database and send it to family and friends free.

'Since our formal launch in June, SunoMusic has achieved tremendous growth and now entertains users in 133 countries. In November, the average time spent by each visitor on our website per session was 35 minutes. We are particularly proud of this record with our users, considering most other websites enjoy 2 to 20 minutes of user attention per session,' said Prashanth Kumar, executive director of technology, Sunomusic.

'Now, we also have an arrangement with Flickr, the online photo sharing site. Our users can choose a song from our database, attach their Flickr photo album and send it to family and friends,' added Kumar.

SunoMusic is a Toronto-based website that specialises in Bollywood. It offers a mixture of Bollywood hits including bhangra, ghazals, pop and instrumental numbers.
